Stand Alone Sermons

The book of Proverbs begins with a reference to the importance of listening to your mother's teaching and ends with a mother's teaching to her son which has forever been inscripturated for future generations.
In this Easter message we take a look at the famous scene where the women arrive at the empty tomb and then Jesus appears to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus.
On this 49th anniversary of Sanctity of Life Sunday, we consider how God has intricately woven each of us in our mother's womb and how that should compel us to value life even in the womb.
How can we display thankfulness as a church community? Join us as we consider the importance of letting the peace of Christ rule our hearts, the Word of Christ dwell in us, and the Gospel of Christ compel our words and deeds.
The key to eternal youth is not found in a bottle of anti-aging cream. It is found in the newness which Christ alone can give. In this message, we consider how all those who are in Christ are truly new creations and must live in light of this reality.

Encouragement for Mom- Titus 2:4-5- May 10, 2020

Many moms feel discouraged and don't feel that their daily life of diaper-changing, dish-washing, and child-rearing has much significance. In Titus 2, God highlights the importance of the work of a mom and wife in the home and calls all women to take part in this noble task of disciple-making in the church, whether they have children or not.

The Resurrection Requires a Response- Acts 2:22-41- April 12, 2020

This Easter morning in 2020, we sit at the feet of a witness to Christ's resurrection: Simon Peter. We listen as he preaches his first sermon and sees 3,000 souls added to the church. This once fearful disciple who denied His Master before a servant girl is now boldly proclaiming Him to the masses gathered in Jerusalem. But his sermon teaches us something vitally important for those who heard him then and for us who hear him today: the resurrection requires a radical response from us. One of repentance and faith in Christ and of joining the local community of Christ to live on mission for Him.

Behold Your King- Luke 19:28-44- April 5, 2020

This Palm Sunday, we saw how we must behold our great King each day as God's people. He is a King who came into Jerusalem with great purposefulness, humility, and broken-heartedness.
61 million. A number that greatly exceeds every American death in any war and the Holocaust combined. This is how many of our generation are now dead because of the abortion industry. Here in a hidden little proverb we are told to be strong, to be active, and to be honest when the weak are being snatched away to death before our very eyes.
Seeing 20/20 in 2020—Psalm 90—Dec. 29, 2019
What better way to end a year and begin a new year than on your knees before God? In this sermon, we consider that we must catch a vision of God, ourselves, and the vital need for prayer.

WILL SALTER—JAMES 1:19-27—NOV. 10, 2019
In this sermon by pastoral intern Will Salter, we learn the importance of being doers of God's Word and not merely hearers.

MISSIONARY REPORT BY LAEKAN CARTER—NOV. 10, 2019
IMB missionary Laekan Carter, who grew up at WBC, shares the challenges and joys of ministry in Kenya and expresses thanks for our church's support.

EVENING SERVICE—ISAIAH 1:12-18—FEB. 17, 2019
A recent Houston newspaper article released chilling statistics of 220 gospel ministers who were convicted or plead guilty of sexual abuse, leaving 700 victims affected. In this study, we took a look at what God's Word tells us to do when the church turns a blind eye to sexual abuse. This was a hard lesson for us all to go through, but something vitally important to protect children and ourselves from the schemes of the devil.

LANDON CRENSHAW—GUEST PREACHER—MATTHEW 28:16-20—FEB. 17, 2019
In this sermon, Bro. Landon challenged us to take Christ's Great Commission seriously. We are not merely called upon to win people to Jesus, but to make disciples who will then make disciples themselves. We must believe the authority of Christ, obey the command of Christ, and depend on the presence of Christ as we seek to make disciples.

EVENING SERVICE—RYAN POWELL—EZEKIEL 34—JAN. 27, 2019
The father is called to be not only the physical breadwinner in the home, providing for and protecting the family. He is also called to be the spiritual breadwinner, providing a diet of God's Word and protecting his family from the world's twisted thinking. In this sermon, Ryan Powell encourages and challenges us to see the primary disciple makers in the home as the parents and calls fathers to lead the family in a spiritual sense as well as physical.

"FEARFULLY AND WONDERFULLY MADE"—PSALM 139:13-18—JAN. 20, 2019
This week in 1973, the supreme court decision known as Roe V. Wade legalized abortion in all fifty states. Today, the lives of more than 60 million Americans have been taken in shady and unsanitary abortion clinic offices. Despite the horror of such a figure, Americans seem unconcerned. As a whole, our nation is willing to murder innocent lives in the name of "freedom" and "choice." The main issue at stake is whether or not there is life in the womb. In Psalm 139 we see the wonder of God's creation of every human life in the womb.

EVENING SERVICE—"THE SIN OF ACHAN"—JOSHUA 7—JAN. 13, 2019
Sin is dangerous for all of us. In this account of Achan's sin, we discover how God commanded His people to address it and we see the warning that we should all take sin seriously.

"GETTING IN THE WORD TOGETHER"—PSALM 19—JAN. 6, 2019Our church focus in 2019 will be getting in the Word together. If there is one thing that will edify, encourage, and equip us to take the Gospel seriously, it is careful study of God's Word together. We begin 2019 as a church by looking at Psalm 19 and its emphasis on the treasure that is God's Word.

SUNDAY NIGHT SERVICE- NEHEMIAH 8:1-12- 10/21/18
Can you imagine a worship service that lasted all day long? That's what happens when Israel humbles themselves before God after their return from exile. God's people had neglected God's Word for nearly a century and were now hungry to hear from it. Join us as we discover the hunger of God's people for God's Word and how we can re-kindle that hunger ourselves.

"I NO LONGER LIVE. CHRIST LIVES IN ME."- SUNDAY NIGHT SERVICE- GALATIANS 2:20- 10/14/18
As believers, how should we view our daily lives? We must remember that our old self is dead and gone and we are now united to Christ by faith. We must recall that the Spirit of Christ now indwells and empowers us for holiness. Lastly, we must live each moment by faith in Christ's death and resurrection on our behalf.

"BIBLICAL FATHERHOOD"- DEUTERONOMY 6:4-8- JUNE 17, 2018
What does God want out of fathers? Although society expects dads to be nothing more than Homer Simpsons and Al Bundy's God commands more. We learn that a father's leadership in the home is vital. Fatherly leadership in the home should be marked by an undivided devotion to God, an intimate study of Scripture, and a diligent training of children.

"A MOTHER'S GIFT"- 1 SAMUEL 1- MAY 13, 2018
What does it look like for a mother to raise her children well before God? We learn from Hannah in this study that God can use even infertility in his good plan. We also learn the importance of turning our anxieties into prayer and viewing our children as gifts not only to be enjoyed, but returned for God's glory.

"WHEN GOD TURNS THE PAGE"- JOSHUA 1:1-9- MAY 6, 2018
How can we remain faithful to God when stepping into a new chapter in life? Perhaps we're graduating from high school or college or maybe we're going in for a major surgery or perhaps have recently lost a spouse to cancer. No matter what this new chapter holds for us, we can learn from Joshua the importance of clinging to God's faithful character, abiding in God's presence, and meditating on God's holy Word.

DEACON ORDINATION SERVICE- ACTS 6:1-8- APRIL 15, 2018
Today we ordained five men into the deacon ministry at Westside. It was a true delight to see men of God step up to the plate to serve Christ's people.

"Abortion=Child Sacrifice"- Psalm 106:34-48- January 21, 2018
On this anniversary of the Roe V. Wade decision in 1973, we take another look at God's perspective on abortion. We see in Psalm 106 that God hates the evil practice of child sacrifice and we draw a connection to the sacrifice of our children in the womb to American comforts. Thankfully, for those who have had abortions, there is abundant grace, just as there is for any sinner who turns in faith to Christ.

"A Simple Gospel Equation"- Romans 10:11-17- December 31, 2017
We all love to make New Year's resolutions as we prepare for the calendar to flip another page and see that new number: 2018. The only problem with most of our New Year's resolutions is that we aim too high and don't have a practical plan for how we're going to attain them. I propose we follow Paul's simple math in Romans 10, and in light of the vast lostness in our world, aim to reach one person with the good news of Jesus this year.

"God's Will: Your Gratitude" -1 Thessalonians 5:16-18- November 19, 2017
It is easy to fret over God's will for our lives. Where should I attend school? Who should I marry? How do I know I'm working in the right field? The Bible never gives us specific answers to these questions, but it does tell us clearly what God wants from us. We discover from 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 that God's will for our lives is that we never stop rejoicing, never stop praying, and never stop giving thanks.

Matthew 28:16-20- Go Make Disciples
The Great Commission is not the great suggestion. We are called upon by the King of Heaven to make disciples, therefore we must ensure we are living as His sent out messengers in this world. Making disciples means not only evangelizing, but teaching them to observe His commands. We are called upon to multiply, not merely add.

Luke 15- A Father's Welcome Home (8/23/17)
In this Homecoming sermon, we discover that God loves to call a celebration in heaven whenever one sinner repents, and so should we. Although we rejoice over lots of things, the salvation of sinners ought to top the charts of our excitement. When it doesn't, we begin to look more like the prideful older brother than the gracious and compassionate Father.
