Minor Prophets
Hosea: Scandalous Grace—May 26, 2019
Hosea tells us the story of God's radical commitment to His people. He describes his people as an unfaithful wife living in prostitution and Himself as her faithful Husband. This raw, unfiltered book teaches us that God takes our sin seriously and calls us to repentance, yet He also is willing to cleanse us and take us to Himself by means of Christ's work on the cross in our place.
Joel: This Day for That Day—June 2, 2019
Throughout our lives we will anticipate some big day, whether that be a wedding day or first day on a job or birth of a baby. Nevertheless, all these minor d days are preparing us for the captital D day...the Day of the LORD. How can we be ready for the day of the LORD? The message of the prophet Joel gives us three ways we can prepare ourselves this day for That coming Day.
Amos: Let Justice Roll Down Like Waters—June 9, 2019
Godly men and women throughout history have stood up against social injustices of their day to which their culture seemed blind. Whether that be Martin Luther King Jr the civil rights activist or Martin Luther the protestant reformer. Amos is such a man who preached against Israel's complacency and corruption. Called by God as a farmer from the South, Amos preached a tough message to some tough city folks in the Northern kingdom of Israel. Yet Amos' message is a message for us today. Like the people of Israel, we must beware prosperity, complacency, and hypocrisy if we wish to live as God's children in this world.
Obadiah: When the World is Against Us- June 16, 2019
We all know that a loving father will take vengeance on anyone who harms his children. It is the same with our Heavenly Father. The book of Obadiah is uniquely written not to Israel, but Edom who refused to help Israel when they were attacked. We learn that when the world is against us, we can remember three glorious truths: 1) God is on our side, 2) the Day is drawing near, and 3) we will rule the world with Christ one day.
Jonah: God's Loving Pursuit of Rebels- June 23, 2019
We all have a tendency to run from God. But the surprising truth behind the book of Jonah is that God has a tendency to run down rebels. In this message, we take a look at Jonah's running from God, God's pursuit of Jonah and Nineveh, and why ultimately we still find ourselves running from God from time to time.
Micah: Who Is A God Like You?—June 30, 2019
The book of Micah presents us with a beautiful picture of our holy God and His plan to save a remnant. He is the Judge and yet He came in Christ to bear our judgment. He is exalted in power and yet He came in Christ as a baby in Bethlehem. He is a God who punishes sin and pardons sinners. Join us as we study the problem with God's people, the provision through God's Son, and the promise of God's faithfulness.
Nahum: The Vindication of God—July 7, 2019
Nahum is a book written to comfort God's oppressed people. This comfort, however, comes in the form of a promise to judge Nineveh for their atrocities against Israel. For all who have been abused or persecuted or bullied, the book of Nahum comforts us to know there is a God who sees and will one day bring about total justice.
Habakkuk: Living by Faith—July 14, 2019
How can a good God exist when there is so much evil present in the world? This question is answered in the book of Habakkuk, for those humble enough to listen to God's Word. This book records a prayer between the prophet and God and teaches us a significant lesson in living by faith. Join us as we consider how we can live by faith and not by sight.
Zephaniah: From Silence to Singing—July 21, 2019
The ultimate question is not, "How can bad things happen to good people?", but, "What will a good God do with all these bad people?" This is the question the book of Zephaniah answers. God will either judge the wicked or convert them into good people by means of His Gospel. This book is all about the coming Day of the Lord and calls for two clear responses: silence on the part of the rebellious and singing on the part of the redeemed. Join us as we consider why it is only those who have first been silenced by God's justice who can sing of God's grace.
Haggai: If You Build It, He Will Come—July 28, 2019
How does one go about building God's kingdom? It is not with brick and mortar or wood and concrete. Rather, the building of God's kingdom is the building up of God's people. The temple God commanded His returned exiles to re-build was a symbol of God's presence among them, but today born again Christians are the temple of the Holy Spirit. But how can we effectively build up God's people? We learn from Haggai that it involves repentance, reliance, and remembrance.
Zechariah: Thriving in the Day of Small Things—August 4, 2019
It is easy for us to get discouraged when we look around us and see little fruit of our labors for Christ. We are encouraged in the book of Zechariah that God will bless our labors if they are done in the power of His Spirit. We must not look to what we currently see, but live trusting in the promise of God's Word.
Malachi: Where to Look in Seasons of Doubt—August 11, 2019
God's people can sometimes find themselves utterly discouraged and doubtful. We can even at times begin to question the very clear truths of God's Word. Where are we to look when we feel disillusioned or upset with God? The only place to go is God Himself. In the book of Malachi, God encourages His people to look up to Him, look out for one another, and look ahead to the Day when all these promises will find their ultimate fulfillment.
